From the infinitely large to the microscopically small, nature is design at its best, where everything is at once deeply practical and supremely beautiful. Pierre’s work incorporates organic shapes, contrasting materials, and vibrant colors to convey his ideas. Movement and animation are also evoked throughout his body of work, to engage, entice, and encourage public interaction. For the past few years, he has been experimenting with fusing art and science, and applying playful abstractions of molecular and cellular division, growth and movement to a variety of tables, benches, light columns, engineered windscreens and public art installations, which serve as studies of positive and negative space, and explorations of light and shadow. As an artist, Pierre also draws inspiration from the neighboring communities and their unique history and characteristics. He thrives to create design solutions which conceptually and elegantly emphasize the surrounding area, and hopes to express in form the dynamic balance needed in life, between fun and function, rest and action.
Over the past few years, Pierre has been involved with many large scale design and public art projects, with clients ranging from the City of Vancouver and the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics Games, the Peace Bridge Authority of Fort Erie and Buffalo New York, to the cities of Toronto, North Vancouver and Oakville, McMaster University, the Walt Disney Corporation, Nienkamper Furniture, Concord Adex Developments, XM Radio for Toyota/Lexus Canada, GreyEagle Casino, Toronto’s Royal Canadian Yacht Club and Princeton University.
When designing anything from furniture and light fixtures, to public spaces and art installations, Pierre always tries to thoroughly understand his client’s specific needs and given environment, to then offer an engaging and animated design solution. He believes that working very closely, with clients and all other involved teams, is imperative to ensure the success of all projects, from the initial concept stages, to the final installation.
In addition to his design consultancy work, Pierre also has a successful furniture line, Mitosis, which was featured in the National Post, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and Toronto Life magazine, and has also been recently commissioned to become principal furniture for the lobby and lounge areas for Princeton University’s Julian Library.
Pierre is a driven, creative designer who always thrives to marry beauty with utility. He takes every chance to expand art and design, while keeping in mind the delicate balance needed between materials, environment, fun and functionality.
